Was good while it lasted - Edward Prete - New York City
I have had this router for about a year and a half. Received it as a gift for Christmas 2001. When new this cost almost 0 because it has a built in print server option (windows only feature). Needless to say, it is only 1.5 years later and it has died completely. Luckily it is under a “2 Year Warranty”. You would think that that would mean till December 03 since it was bought in December 01, however on the bottom it states the warranty period is up in April 2003 (I guess it was sitting a an e-tailers shelf for 5 months?). Luckily it died this week as opposed to two weeks from now when I’d be probably out of luck.
While it worked it was ok. Not Great. I have a TiBook So I can only expect a decent signal at best. The signal transmitted was often varying significantly, even though I wasn’t moving from my couch. I often had to reboot the modem , then router to get a strong signal once again. It is hard to determine whether these problems were more with the router or with the laptop itself but possibly a combination of both.
This is actually my second Asante. First one (a hard wired version) died 2 weeks out of the warranty period (warranty seems to go by the date stamp on the bottom of the unit) after I had already purchased this wireless unit. Needless to say, Netgear is probably the next one I will buy.

I’ve got 2 wireless ‘G’ routers: Linksys and Netgear.
I tested them both. I’ve had problems with both. And when my Dad came to me asking me to setup another wireless network at his house, I chose the Netgear router.
I don’t know about the “Super G” as all my wireless equipment may negotiate at 108MBPS but ultimately they stabalize at 54mbps so I don’t see a significant gain in this area. Where I do see a gain is in it’s user interface and ease of setup. You can’t drop a connected device from the router, which I don’t like. But it has a lot of features I do like including the ability to block sites and services. You can prevent your kids from going to places they shouldn’t be going to. I also like the ease of setup with port forwarding and port triggering. There’s an easy help guide on the right navigation bar which explains these concepts in simple terms. The nicest part for me is the Dynamic DNS function which links your router to a dynamic DNS service provider.
As for the router itself, the range is excellent. It has an extended broadcast range option which is great. With it on, I could pick up my network with my PDA from a block away. I usually leave it off as we don’t need it anywhere in the house. It has all the standard security functions as any other home router. I will say the page load times and gaming FPS are a little slower than the Linksys but the overall reliability and stability of the router far exceeds the Linksys.
I was a linksys guy until I bought this router. My whole family now has the Netgear routers. The Linksys just collects dust on the shelf. I should ebay that thing one of these days.

I’ve had wireless routers in the past. I’ve dealt with Linksys routers that would lock up constantly. This router is fantastic! I’ve rebooted this router *MAYBE* 5 times in the years I’ve had it…and those times were probably due to our laptops, and not the router! Solid router with great range - not as good as some of the newer models, but gives enough signal to wander our house and backyard without issue - the router is located in our basement!
